2010년부터 영어 라이팅 코치, 대학 및 대학원 원서 첨삭 및 번역 일을 했고 2017년부터 본격적으로 전문 라이팅 코치로 일했습니다. 개인적으로도 사회과학 연구자의 길을 걸으며 언제나 영어 글쓰기와 씨름하며 살고 있습니다.

About Me
미국 시골 아주 작은 동네에서 고등학교를 나와 미국 학부, 영국으로의 교환학생, 한국으로의 편입, 두 번의 석사, 그리고 어느새 박사과정까지 오게 되면서 변화하는 환경과 언어, 그리고 문화와 분위기를 이겨내는 나만의 무기는 다름 아닌 글쓰기였습니다. "너는 글쓰기에 소질이 있구나!" 어디를 가던 한 번은 들어 본 말이었기에 언제나 나의 장기라고 생각해 왔습니다.
글쓰기가 제 뒷통수를 친 것은 2016년 가을, 미국 시카고 대학(University of Chicago)에서의 첫 수업, 첫 과제를 제출 하고 난 뒤였습니다. 언제나처럼 뿌듯한 마음으로 에세이를 제출했건만 돌아온 것은 대학입학 이후 처음 받아본 글쓰기 과제에서의 B였습니다. 더욱 충격이었던 점은 교수님의 코멘트였습니다. "생각 자체는 좋은데 읽기 힘듬 (Great ideas, but hard to read)." 생각도 못 해본 평가였습니다. "읽기 힘들다니...너무 고급스러운 글이라 읽기 힘든건가? 그러면 그건 교수님 탓 아닌가?"
이후 학술적 글쓰기 (Academic Writing) 수업에서 저는 인생을 바꾸는 한 마디를 들었습니다.
"읽기 힘들게 쓴다는 것은 죄악이야. 좋은 글이란 간단명료해서 별 무리 없이 쉽게 빨리 읽어 내려갈 수 있는 글, 그러면서도 내용이 명확하게 잘 전달되는 글인거야. 아무도 읽기 힘든 글을 읽고싶어하지 않는다는 것을 꼭 기억해."
저 한마디에 이끌려 제가 이제껏 가지고 있던 글쓰기에 대한 마인드셋을 완전히 새롭게 바꿨습니다. 그리고 다양한 글쓰기 수업과 책, 강연 등을 통해 온전히 저만의 새로운 글쓰기 구조를 만들었습니다. 지난 10년간 쌓여온 잘못된 습관, 구식 표현, 교과서적인 문법 사용, 독자를 생각하지 않은 일방적인 커뮤니케이션을 바꾸는 일은 쉽지 않았지만 아주 빨리 좋은 결과물을 가져왔습니다. 결국 2017년 봄 제출한 석사 논문은 모든 채점자들로 부터 A를 받고 이는 결국 박사과정을 위한 추천서로 까지 연결되었습니다.
Teaching English Writing
그런데 주변을 돌아보니 여전히 영어 글쓰기로 고생하는 많은 분들이 보였습니다. 글쓰기를 처음 배우는 중학생 부터 논문에 진전이 없는 대학원생 까지, 어디서도 제대로 된 영어 글쓰기를 배울 수 없다는게 놀라웠고 내가 글쓰기를 배운 것이 참 행운이었구나, 쉽게 얻은 기회가 아니었구나 라고 느꼈습니다.
그래서 이렇게 배우고 깨달은 글쓰기 마인드셋과 테크닉을 이해하기 쉽게, 상황에 맞게 전달하기 위해 다양한 커리큘럼을 개발하고 전문 라이팅 코치로 활동하기 시작했습니다. 2017년 가을부터 본격적으로 다음과 같은 오프라인 강의 및 컨설팅을 진행했습니다.
- 영어 라이팅 기초 및 프리젠테이션과 스피치를 위한 라이팅 수업
- IB/AP 학생을 위한 시카고라이팅 본수업
- IB/AP 학생을 위한 문학분석(Literary Analysis)과 분석적 글쓰기(Analytic Writing) 수업

- 대학원생을 위한 시카고라이팅 Advanced 수업 및 논문 첨삭
이러한 수업과 컨설팅을 통해 아래와 같은 성과도 이루어 냈습니다. 이제껏 발전해 온 제 라이팅 수업을 이제 온라인을 통해 더 보편적으로 제공해 드리려고 합니다. 좋은 글을 쓰는 방법도 가르쳐 드리지만 그 보다 더 중요한 "내 글을 스스로 첨삭하는 기준과 공식"을 가르쳐 드리는 것을 최고의 목표로 삼고 있습니다. 무엇보다 좋은 영어 라이팅 수업이 부족한 지금, 초보는 초보 나름대로, 전문가는 전문가 나름대로 배울 것이 있는 좋은 글쓰기 수업을 계속해서 제공해 드리기 위해 노력하겠습니다.
